Bikers Escort the Traveling Vietnam Wall

On September 11th, 2013, the day over a million bikers road to DC to stand up for America, Mercer County PA bikers came out full force to escort the Traveling Vietnam Wall from Mercer to Grove City, where it will stand through Sunday the 15th before moving along.

I lived in the DC area for a few years and saw the original Vietnam Wall. It’s a truly moving experience, so it was an honor to help escort this smaller version of the wall into town to allow those who haven’t been to DC get a similar experience and to help honor our veterans.

In both Mercer and Grove City, people were lined along the street to watch the procession and wave flags in support. Thank you to the Grove City council and to the local Legions, Masonic Lodge, and VFWs sponsoring the event. If you’re in the area, be sure to get out and see the wall.

The Perry Monument honors Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over the British in the War of 1812. Perry stationed his troops on the peninsula for easier defense. After the victory, however, the men were stuck in their ships in the bay over the winter, quarantined with Smallpox. It was a harsh winter. They had to walk across the frozen bay for supplies and many didn’t survive. The bay is now called Misery Bay in tribute.

(There is a similar Perry monument not far away in Put-in-Bay, Ohio.)
