The Perry Monument honors Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over the British in the War of 1812. Perry stationed his troops on the peninsula for easier defense. After the victory, however, the men were stuck in their ships in the bay over the winter, quarantined with Smallpox. It was a harsh winter. They had to walk across the frozen bay for supplies and many didn’t survive. The bay is now called Misery Bay in tribute.

(There is a similar Perry monument not far away in Put-in-Bay, Ohio.)
